Corns and Calluses
Overview
Corns and Calluses, while similar in appearance and effect, have a few key differences. Corns are usually more uniform, typically occur on the upper side of the foot, and may be painful. Calluses, on the other hand, vary widely in shape, mostly appear on the bottom of the foot, and are usually painless.
Causes
Ill-fitting shoes and socks are the most common causes for corns and calluses, as they most likely form as a result of excessive friction against the skin. Sports and physical labor, as well as going barefoot may also cause them to form.
Symptoms
- A hard, raised, rough area appears on the skin
- An area of pain underneath the skin
- Dry or flaky skin
- Slight to severe discoloration
Treatment
While corns and calluses are technically different, they can be treated using the same techniques such as wearing patches over the affected area and trimming away at excess skin. Surgery can also be performed, which is usually a quick procedure not requiring an overnight hospital stay.
