The Different Types of Custom Orthotics

    • Functional/ Rigid Custom Orthotics
      • These are firm, sturdy, and often made of a material such as plastic. They are designed to tightly control movements as well as correct foot posture, and are typically molded to shape the person’s foot. Typically, these are placed in dress shoes or shoes meant for walking.
    • Accommodative Custom Orthotics
      • These orthotics are intended to cushion the foot and relieve pain, accommodating to the foot’s current alignment. They are made of a soft, malleable material that is capable of relieving pressure– typically prescribed to treat diabetic related foot issues.
    • Semi-Rigid Custom Orthotics
      • A mix of the two, semi-rigid orthotics offer the comfort of accommodative orthotics with the rigid control of functional orthotics. They are primarily intended to treat foot issues caused by arthritis or diabetes, as well as flatfoot disorders in children. Athlete’s can also use these to prevent exertion during training.
