Diabetic Shoes
Individuals with diabetes must meet strict Medicare requirements to be eligible for diabetic shoes and diabetic shoe inserts reimbursement. One must be under the active care of a doctor (MD or DO) managing the disease. There must also be other medical findings such as loss of feeling (neuropathy,) poor circulation, history of foot ulcer, foot deformity, or calluses. Qualified individuals may receive one pair of extra-depth shoes and three pairs of shoe inserts annually.
Steps to obtaining diabetic footwear from Crimson Foot Care (CFC)
Step 1 PRESCRIPTION
- CFC Podiatrist will create a prescription (written detail order) as part of the medical note
- Patient will have feet examined and measured
- Patient will pre-select desired shoe

Step 2 CERTIFICATION (by MD or DO treating the diabetes, or NP under supervision of an MD)
- CFC will send the foot exam medical note and a certification statement form to the doctor’s office to get a signature of approval
- CFC will obtain medical record from the medical provider indicating active medical treatment of diabetes
Step 3 SHOE DISPENSING
- Once all required paperwork is signed and obtained, the selected shoe and inserts are ordered by Crimson Foot Care
- Patient will be called for an in-person appointment for diabetic shoe dispensing. This cannot be done same day as a routine foot care appointment according to Medicare rules.
