Plantar Fasciitis
Overview
Characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament which runs from the ball of the foot to across the arch and into the heel. Pain can be felt anywhere along the ligament, and it usually is felt upon standing after a period of rest, (most commonly with the first few steps in the morning.) This is also known as “Heel Spur Syndrome.”
Causes
Plantar fasciitis is caused by repeated overuse and strain to the plantar fascia, such as high impact activities like running, jumping, dancing; as well as jobs that require long hours of standing, like teachers, retail workers, and factory workers.
Symptoms
- Stiffness in the foot
- Discomfort in the heel/ foot area after extended periods of rest such as sleeping
- Tenderness when touching the area
- A stiff achilles tendon
Treatment
Plantar fasciitis can be treated with things such as physical therapy, rest, custom foot orthotics, stretching, and ice. 90% of patients with plantar fasciitis are able to treat it through nonsurgical means, however surgical treatments do exist, which include:
- Gastrocnemius recession
- Partial plantar fascia release
