Overview<\/span><\/p>\n

A bunion is a bony bump that usually forms at the base of the big toe joint. Possible reasons for development may be due to hereditary problems, improper shoe wear, or poor foot biomechanics. This usually causes the big toe to list towards the other four toes on the foot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Causes<\/span><\/p>\n

While bunions are genetic, they can become worse over time via: ill-fitting or pointy shoes that crowd the toes together, putting pressure on the big toe; standing for long periods of time, and arthritis in the feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Symptoms<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • A bony bump located at the base of the big toe<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Pain, swelling, or stiffness<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Discoloration or redness<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Inability to bend the big toe<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Treatment<\/span><\/p>\n

    Nonsurgical options such as wearing padding and taking over the counter pain relievers cannot completely remove the bunion, but they can reduce symptoms and combat pain. To remove the problem area completely, a bunionectomy can be performed, which will correct the bone position and remove inflamed tissue.<\/span><\/p>\n
