I am delighted to tell you more about me and my new podiatry practice in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  My family moved to “The City of Champions” last year and I am eager to get in the game to help the community be a champion in foot health in addition to its university football achievements.  As a podiatrist for 17 years, I can tell you that foot pain is not normal and there are solutions to staying on your feet comfortably.  Even when foot pain is absent, like in diabetics with loss of feeling in the feet, understanding the importance of foot care can be a limb and life saver.

Diabetic foot care is one service that is important to raise awareness of in Alabama.  According to America’s Health Rankings, Alabama ranks 43rd in overall health status in the U.S. and has a high prevalence of diabetes.  In fact, the diabetes rate increased by 17% in the past 2 years (the highest in the nation), according to the report.  Podiatrists play a key role in treating the diabetic foot which is prone to infections, hospitalizations, and amputations.  A study by the American Podiatric Medical Association has found that including a podiatrist in diabetes care can reduce the risk of lower limb amputations up to 85 percent.  Treating the diabetic foot is personal to me.  My own father, who was diagnosed with type II diabetes, lived his life without experiencing a serious foot complication.  You can read more about me being his personal podiatrist in my blog “5 Foot Lessons From My Diabetic Father.”

Other podiatry services being offered in my practice include treatments for:

  • Arch and Heel Pain:  Plantar Fasciitis, Tendonitis
  • Arthritic Conditions:  Gout, Arthritic Feet
  • Foot Deformities:  Bunions, Hammertoes, Flat Feet
  • Nail Conditions:  Ingrown or Fungal Toenails
  • Skin Conditions:  Athlete’s Foot, Dry Cracked Skin/Heels, Warts, Corns, Calluses
  • Wounds:  diabetic ulcers, trauma wounds

Your feet can show signs of serious health problems that have symptoms which manifest first in the feet, such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease.  Foot pain can prevent you from exercising on your feet and living a better quality of life.  My treatments include educating patients on their foot condition.  A well informed patient will make better health choices leading to a more successful outcome.

I am happy to be part of the social media community to help educate the public on proper foot care and healthy living.  My practice website offers free patient education resources in addition to blog posts containing foot health news and updates on the practice.

I was a podiatrist in my home state of Louisiana where I gained experience caring for people needing foot health awareness.  It was my husband’s career as a university professor that brought my family to this city.  Accepting the challenge to start a new medical practice in another state is a bold one.  I believe our new home in “The City of Champions” will mean more than winning football games.  It will be an opportunity to help people gain victory over challenges that come against their health.
