Take a look at the great time everyone had at this year’s Senior Citizens Appreciation Day event hosted by The Area Agency on Aging of West Alabama. We certainly enjoyed participating by providing diabetic foot screenings and answering questions about foot care. Because when your feet feel good, it’s easy to join in on the fun.

The theme was “Get Into the Act” in accordance with Older Americans Month. Seniors were being reminded to be as involved and interactive as they have been the past few years.  Exhibitors joined in on the theme by having an interactive game at their table. We had the board game Operation. Our message to those with at-risk feet included preventative foot care can help prevent a serious complication like an amputation.

Seniors were very appreciative to have a Tuscaloosa podiatrist at this year’s event.  They were lined up for their turn at getting a free diabetic foot screening.

In addition to the foot screening, we offered a “Pamper Your Feet” door prize with essentials to help keep one’s feet looking and feeling great.

Diabetes affects many different systems in the body. So, it is important to check for signs of poor circulation, nerve damage, and skin & nail changes.

Many times, diabetes is first detected from foot symptoms.  It is important to tell your doctor if you are feeling pain, burning, tingling or numbness.  This can be a sign of peripheral neuropathy, nerve damage that is associated with diabetes. It is important to have a podiatrist as part of your health care team.  This becomes necessary if it is found that there is loss of feeling or poor circulation in the feet.

Foot care is important so that you can stay active. Dancing is a fun way to exercise and there was much of that during the event held at the Bryant Conference Center at the University of Alabama. There were music, singing, and special entertainment to please the seniors in attendance.
