Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy (photobiomodulation) is a relatively new innovation in the world of healing medicine. It is known for its convenience and intuitiveness, and the fact that sessions are relatively short compared to other methods of healing.
So, how does red light therapy (RLT) work exactly?
RLT increases productivity in your cells. It increases ATP production by removing nitric oxide stuck in the mitochondria, making way for oxygen to enter and do its job. When oxygen enters, it provides the cell with more energy—thus, encouraging the cell to do its job quicker. This promotes regeneration and healing within the targeted area. RLT can help many things, such as promoting hair growth, reducing acne/ wrinkles/ dark spots, reducing muscle fatigue, promoting muscle growth, and alleviating joint pain.
In terms of results, it varies widely as to how long it takes to notice them. In most cases, noticable improvements are usually seen at around eight weeks, though this number can fluctuate significantly depending on the severity of the affliction.
As for who should not use RLT, epileptic people and those with sensitivities to light, as the exposure could trigger a negative reaction. And because this treatment is still new, there have not been enough studies pertaining to how pregnant women will be affected. Until there is a definitive answer, it is better to remain cautious. Since RLT promotes cell growth, people with cancerous tumors may be harmed, and various medications can potentially cause light sensitivity. It is always advisable to check in with your healthcare provider to see if red light therapy is the right choice for you.
